On Saturday, the day before his planned retirement, the Union government granted CBDT Chairperson Nitin Gupta a nine-month contract extension.

He was set to retire on September 30th.
According to the government order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Gupta’s re-appointment as CBDT Chairman on a contract basis, with effect from 1.10.2023 to 30.06.2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the recruitment rules, on the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers.
The CBDT is the Income-tax Department’s policy-making apex body. A presiding officer leads it and may include up to six members with the status of special secretary.
