A Significant Change in Income Tax Return Verification Rules

Beginning August 1, the Income Tax Department has lowered the time limit for e-verification or hard copy submission of the ITR-V, post-filing taxpayer returns, from 120 days to 30 days.

On July 29, the department sent a notice noting the change in the timeframe.

If an ITR is not e-verified within the time frame specified, it is considered invalid.

“It has been decided that in respect of any electronic transmission of return data on or after the date of this notification comes into effect, the time limit for e-verification or submission of ITR-V shall now be 30 days from the date of transmitting/uploading the data of return electronically,” the notification stated.

Previously, the period for e-verifying the ITR or mailing the ITR-V after submitting an Income Tax Return (ITR) was 120 days from the date of uploading the ITR.

The notification highlighted that if the e-verification of the ITR or hard copy ITR-V is delivered through post after the time limit of 30 days, the return would be deemed as late or beyond the due date.

Those who want to transmit the ITR-V in hard copy can do so to the Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru-560500, Karnataka, using “speed post only.”

“The date of shipment of fully verified ITR-V by speed post shall be used to determine the 30 days, from the date of sending the date of Income-tax return electronically,” it stated.
